HOW THE JOURNEY BEGAN...
As a child, I envied the natural full tresses of long length hair of other ethnic backgrounds. In the beauty industry, it is perceived that only being of another ethnicity promotes unimaginable hair growth. From my worldview, only a handful few women of brown and dark melanin complexion grew their natural tresses to such lengths straighten. As the years passed, I joined along with most brown skinned women keened to the likeness of weaves and wigs as their only alternative to long tresses or (per se) protective hair styling options.
Over the decades, my hair was stunted with breakage and damage impacted by improper care, manipulation, and excessive usage of weaves and wigs. Nevertheless, a few embarrassing moments. I knew that a change must come!
At the age of 35, I have begun to see beautiful women with locs that were healthy and long. From here, I was intrigued with locs that I promised myself that at 40 my journey will begin. I thought by that time, I would be ready. I would tell the world to forget your beauty standards, I'm going to chase my own!
At the age of 39, I realized that 40 had come too quickly. It was just like only 4 minutes ago (lol). I remembered the promise to myself. Added by this time, I can feel a thinning in the mid-back of my head perhaps from where I lay my head on my pillow.
I recall 3 months before my 41st birthday, a former co-worker came walking down the hall strutting her new locs with new confidence and assurance. She was sure that she made the "best decision ever"! She walked with pride and her locs were so small to me. She told me they were Sisterlocks®. After a couple of months of researching and seeing ( I meant stalking on FB groups and IG 😁) more beautiful women with this new locking system, Sisterlocks®, in which I've grown to admire. I was in love all back over again. From there, my loc journey was illuminated.
The path took me to embrace to becoming a loc practitioner specializing in Micro Interlocks and Sisterlocks®.
As one of my clients, sitting in my chair for many hours, I hope to share in your journey of life with hair freedom.
To share a bond in humanity, love, and hair care!
It's nice to meet you and I hope that we can be on this journey together...
Love,
Yakeisha
I'm a Navy veteran and mother of 3 lovely sons. I've experienced every side of relationship evolution and personal development in faith, family, parenting, friendship, companionship, community, career and business. However, in those growth experiences, I gained balance, practicability, peace and connection as indispensable values that illuminate my life journey in "So Becoming Yakeisha"
I've shared adventures in slow-pitch softball, singing, dance, graphic and web design, business coaching, marketing, photography, outreach/public ministry, international missions, and a vivid lover of world culture, history and DIY projects.
If I would to describe myself..."I'm your black fairy, free-n-spirit mermaid, artsy, creative, comedian, a good friend, 90% perfectionist, cheerleader, relatable, good listener, team player, professional, family-oriented, God-loving and caring human to all I meet!"
My life's treasure is being the best daughter, mom, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, love, and business owner.
I'm a graduate and alumni of Strayer University, where I obtained a bachelor's in Business Administration with a concentration in Acquisition and Contracts Management. I absolutely love my day career field in which I find the daily ins and out of the procurement and contracts mgt world muchily relatable to my own business ventures and aspirations. My current interest is in genealogy, real estate and financial literacy.
I spend my day hours as a contracts and acquisition professional and evening hours as a locs practitioner and mentor to many (especially the ladies of the LocHerRoom💓--I love to see them win and do better than me!). If I'm not working, I'm either enjoying my day with family, catching up on R&R (breathe),, celebrating others or you may see out and about (especially in the fall at Friday night high school football games or Saturday afternoon Alabama football games! Roll Tide Roll!
